Memperkenalkan Topik & Agenda Debat

The topic of today’s debate is “This house believes that social media does more harm than good”.

This is a British Parliamentary debate, which means that there are four teams of two speakers each: two teams on the government side and two teams on the opposition side.

Each speaker will have seven minutes to deliver their speech, with points of information allowed after the first minute and before the last minute.

The order of speakers will be: Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition, Deputy Prime Minister, Deputy Leader of Opposition, Member of Government, Member of Opposition, Government Whip, and Opposition Whip.

The motion for this debate is “This house believes that social media does more harm than good”.

This means that we are debating whether the benefits of social media outweigh its drawbacks for individuals and society.

Social media refers to websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.

Harm refers to any negative impact on physical, mental, emotional, or social well-being.

The agenda for this debate is as follows:

First, we will have a coin toss to determine which team will be on which side.

Then, we will have 15 minutes of preparation time for each team to prepare their arguments.

After that, we will begin with the speeches from each speaker in turn.

There will be no breaks between speeches. After all the speeches are done, we will have a short intermission while the judges deliberate and decide on the winner.

Finally, we will announce the result and give feedback to each team.

Aturan Debat

Before we begin, let me explain the rules of the debate.

Each side has three speakers who will speak in turn. The affirmative side agrees with the topic and the negative side disagrees with it.

The first speaker of each side will define the topic, present their team’s line, outline their arguments briefly, and present the first half of their case.

The second speaker of each side will reaffirm their team’s line, rebut some of the main points of the other side, and present the second half of their case.

The third speaker of each side will reaffirm their team’s line, rebut all the remaining points of the other side, and summarize their case.

Each speaker has a maximum time of one minute. I will check the time carefully and give a sign when 10 seconds are left. When your time is up, you may finish your sentence and then stop. You may not transfer your spare time to another speaker.

Interrupting a speaker is forbidden. You must listen respectfully and wait for your turn to speak. The audience must not participate in the debate either. They may only observe and vote at the end.

After all six speakers have spoken, there will be a final statement from one speaker from each side. They may not introduce any new arguments or evidence at this point. They may only restate their main points and appeal to the audience.

The audience will then have five minutes to share their impressions and opinions on what they have heard. After that, they will vote by a show of hands for either the affirmative or negative side. The majority wins the vote.

Are there any questions about these rules? If not, let us begin with our first speaker from the affirmative side.

Menyimpulkan Debat

Thank you very much to both teams for their engaging and insightful presentations. We have just witnessed a heated debate on whether homework should be banned in schools. The affirmative team argued that homework is unnecessary, stressful and harmful for students’ well-being and learning. The negative team countered that homework is beneficial, manageable and helpful for students’ academic success and skills.

Both teams made some valid points and supported them with relevant examples and statistics. However, they also faced some challenges and criticisms from their opponents. The affirmative team was questioned on their sources of evidence and their alternative solutions for homework. The negative team was challenged on their assumptions about homework quality and quantity.

There were some areas of agreement between the sides, such as the importance of student autonomy, feedback and balance. There were also some areas of disagreement, such as the impact of homework on student motivation, achievement and health.

In my opinion, both sides did a good job in presenting their arguments and rebutting their opponents. However, I think there are some areas where they could improve their performance. For example, the affirmative team could have provided more concrete examples of how homework affects students negatively. The negative team could have addressed more directly the issue of homework equity and diversity.

Before we move on to the next stage of this debate, I would like to thank both teams once again for their participation and preparation. I would also like to invite our judges to share their thoughts on this debate.
