Verb -ing: Perbedaan Gerund vs Present Participle
Gerund | Contoh verb –ing | Present Participle |
I love swimming at the ocean | Swimming | I am swimming at the ocean |
I enjoy listening to classical music | Listening | I am listening to classical music |
I stop visiting grandma’s house | Visiting | I am visiting grandma’s house |
I quit reading novels years ago | Reading | I am reading a novel |
I hate flying across continent | Flying | I am flying like a bird |
I postpone working a lot | Working | I am working like bee workers |

Dan masih banyak lagi… |
Gerund biasanya mengikuti kata kerja tertentu, yakni: consider, discuss, enjoy, finish, keep, keep on, mind, postpone, put off, quit, stop, talk about, dan think about.
Beberapa di antaranya telah kami contohkan dalam tabel di atas. Kata kerja tersebut tidak dapat diikuti dengan bentuk infinitif (to + basic verb).
Sehingga salah bila ada yang menuliskan:
- I enjoy to listen… (SALAH)
- I quit to read… (SALAH)
- I finish to write… (SALAH)
- I don’t mind to wait… (SALAH)
- He finished to study… (SALAH)
