Perbedaan Just dan Only
Ada banyak sekali kosakata dalam bahasa Inggris yang bila diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Indonesia dapat memiliki arti yang sama. Namun, bila ditelaah lebih lanjut, kosakata tersebut bisa jadi memiliki perbedaan baik dalam arti sebenarnya maupun dalam kegunaan atau fungsinya dalam suatu kalimat.
Salah satu di antaranya adalah kata-kata just danonly . Bila diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Indonesia, keduanya memang sama-sama dapat diartikan sebagai “hanya”. Namun, tahukah Anda bahwa keduanya ternyata memiliki makna serta digunakan dalam konteks yang berbeda?

JUST digunakan untuk:
1. Merujuk pada waktu di masa lalu yang belum lama ini, “baru saja”. Contoh:
- I’ve just finished the whole new season of Grace and Frankie on Netflix and now I feel hollow.
- He’s just finished his dinner and now already went to bed.
2. Menunjukkan sesuatu yang “hampir” atau selisih sedikit/sebentar. Contoh:
- I just missed the last flight call and now I have to get on the next schedule because all passengers already boarded.
- Father just missed the last bus ride to home because he was looking for his house key.
3. Menunjukkan jarak yang pendek atau dekat. Contoh:
- You can just easily get there by bus.
- I’ll be home right on time, Mom. His house is just around the corner.
4. Menunjukkan bahwa sesuatu merupakan hal yang persis atau sempurna. Contoh:
- It’s just what I wanted for my birthday this year. Thank you so much.
- From the first time they met through a blind date that I set up, I knew they just clicked.
Only
ONLY digunakan untuk:
1. Merujuk pada sesuatu yang khusus atau eksklusif. Contoh:
- This feature is accessible for members only.
- The discount is valid for students only.
2. Menambah keterangan berupa kualitas. Contoh:
- He’s not only a great husband, but also a great father for my kids.
- We regret buying his products. They’re not only expensive, but also have bad quality. Not worth the money.
3. Menyatakan harapan. Contoh:
- If only you were here by my side.
- Don’t we all have that “if only” moment in our lives.
4. Menyatakan keunikan atau satu-satunya. Contoh:
- Both my wife and I are an only child in our families.
- My parents’ only fear is that their kids cannot survive by their own when they’re grown up.
- I don’t think looking ugly is his only concern.
