Apa Itu Complex Sentence?
Complex sentence adalah jenis kalimat yang terdiri dari satu independent clause (klausa bebas/independen) dan satu atau lebih dependent clause (klausa terikat/dependen).
Contoh complex sentence:
“She went to the store, because she needed milk.” (Dia pergi ke toko, karena dia membutuhkan susu).
Dari contoh kalimat diatas, kita bisa bagi menjadi dua klausa:
- Klausa bebas/independen adalah bagian kalimat yang dapat berdiri sendiri sebagai kalimat lengkap, karena memiliki subjek dan predikat yang utuh.
Contoh klausa bebas: “She went to the store” (Dia pergi ke toko). - Klausa terikat/dependen adalah bagian kalimat yang tidak dapat berdiri sendiri sehingga memerlukan klausa bebas/independen untuk memberikan makna yang lengkap.
Contoh klausa terikat: “because she needed milk” (karena dia membutuhkan susu).
Complex sentence sering digunakan untuk memberikan informasi lebih lanjut untuk menjelaskan hubungan antara ide-ide dalam kalimat.
Contoh Complex Sentence
- I will call you when I arrive. (Aku akan meneleponmu ketika aku tiba.)
dependent clause: “When I arrive”
independent clause: “I will call you” - The book that you gave me is interesting. (Buku yang kamu berikan padaku menarik.)
dependent clause: “That you gave me”
independent clause: “The book is interesting” - Because she studied diligently, she earned a scholarship. (Karena dia belajar dengan rajin, dia mendapatkan beasiswa.)

independent clause: “She earned a scholarship“ - Because it was raining, we stayed indoors. (Karena hujan, kami tetap di dalam rumah.)
