Nantinya bekal ilmu seputar TOEFL akan menjadi senjata kamu saat sudah terjun dalam lingkungan akademis atau perkuliahan. Itu sebabnya artikel kali ini masih akan membahas tentang percakapan dengan tema seputar kehidupan kampus.
Bisa tentang dialog antara dosen dan murid, saat dosen sedang memberikan materi kuliah di depan kelas, atau percakapan antar-mahasiswa.
Semua disajikan dalam materi listening comprehension yang diputarkan dalam bentuk audio. Perhatikan sebaik mungkin karena tidak ada pengulangan baik pertanyaan dan percakapannya.

LONG CONVERSATION
Di bawah ini ada percakapan yang cukup panjang antara 2 orang yaitu seorang profesor dan murid yang berminat dalam program magang.
Setelah percakapan usai diputar dalam audio, akan ada beberapa pertanyaan terkait dengan dialog tersebut.
Baik percakapan maupun pertanyaan tidak akan diputar ulang sehingga usahakan konsentrasi tetap terjaga selama menyimak audio, ya!
Listen to part of a conversation between a student and a professor.
Larry: “Hi, Professor Adams. My name is Larry.”
Prof.: “Hi, Larry. How can I help you?”
Larry: “I was told that you place students in internships for various university programs.”
Prof.: “Yes.”
Larry: “Well, I’m interested in the internship at the university art museum… what responsibilities interns have, what qualifications they need to have…”
Prof: “Sorry, those positions are all filled for this year…”
Larry: “Oh! But I just saw the announcement on the museum Web site this morning.”
Prof: “Unfortunately, the Web site is out of date.”
Larry: “I want to do museum work after I graduate, and the job experience would look great on my resume. Plus it’s the only paid internship on campus.”
Prof.: “I understand. However, there are some other ways to get some work experience, even if it’s not exactly what you want. For instance, the library is looking for student volunteers.”
Larry: “The library? But…”
Prof.: “Well, they’re planning an exhibition of photographs documenting the history of the university. And they’re looking for student volunteers to help go through the archives and select images that’ll show how the university’s changed over the last hundred years.”
Larry: “Hmm…”
Prof.: “Now that’s only a four-week project, I think. And, of course, it’s unpaid.”
Larry: “But it would be something to put on my resume…”
Prof.: “Exactly. Why don’t you read the job description – it’s posted on the library’s Web site. If you’re interested, let me know, and I’ll put in a good word for you with Emily Peterson. She is the library’s exhibitions director and will be interviewing applicants.”
Larry: “Ok, I will do that right away.”

Pertanyaan 1: What do the speakers mainly discuss?

Dialog yang diperdengarkan lewat audio menggambarkan bagaimana murid bernama Larry sedang berupaya mencari program magang dan bertanya pada Professor Larry, sehingga jawaban yang tepat adalah (A).

Pertanyaan 2: Why is the student disappointed?
Pilihan jawaban:
A. He has to quit his job at the library.
B. The professor will not allow him to take her class.
C. The university recently closed its museum.
D. The internship he wants is unavailable.
Namun di bagian pertengahan percakapan, Larry merasa kecewa karena program magang yang diinginkannya telah penuh, dari kalimat Professor Adams, ““Sorry, those positions are all filled for this year…” sehingga jawaban yang benar adalah (D).

Pertanyaan 3: What will be displayed in the exhibition at the university library?
Pilihan jawaban:
A. rare books

Jawaban dari pertanyaan ini tergambar saat Professor Adams menjelaskan tentang pameran di perpustakaan seputar fotografi sejarah universitas, sehingga jawaban yang tepat adalah (C).

Pertanyaan 4: What can be inferred about the library’s exhibitions director, Emily Peterson?
Pilihan jawaban:
A.She will select the library’s volunteers.
B. She studied art with the student’s professor.
C. She used to work at the art museum.
D. She joined the library staff recently.
Di bagian akhir percakapan, Professor Adams menyebut nama Emily Peterson, kepala pameran di perpustakaan untuk mempertimbangkan Larry sebagai mahasiswa magang, sehingga bisa disimpulkan bahwa Emily Peterson adalah orang yang berwewenang atau jawaban (A).

Setelah contoh percakapan antara Professor Adams dan Larry seputar program magang, setelah ini ada beberapa dialog singkat tanpa tema khusus yang mengharuskan kamu memilih jawabannya di bagian bawah pertanyaan.
Pria: “Shall I lock up the computer lab now before I go home?”
Wanita: “Don’t bother. I’m not leaving for a while. I can check on my way out.”
Pertanyaan: What will the woman probably do?
Pilihan jawaban:
A. Lock the computer lab later.
B. Leave with the man.
C. Buy a new lock for the computer lab.
D. Show the man where the lab is.
Jawaban yang tepat adalah (A) karena tersirat dari pernyataan speaker wanita bahwa dia masih akan berada di laboratorium komputer lebih lama dan akan memeriksa pintu saat akan pulang.

Wanita: “I heard the math requirements for graduation are being changed.”
Pria: “Yes. And I may be short one course.”
Pertanyaan: What does the man mean?
Pilihan jawaban:
A. He isn’t sure what course to take.
B. That math course is too short.
C. He may not meet the graduation requirements.
D. The graduation date has been changed.
Jawaban yang tepat adalah (C) karena frasa “short one course” adalah kiasan yang berarti tidak memenuhi syarat, terkait dengan aturan baru pelajaran Matematika untuk kelulusan.
