Grammar-Adjective: Apa itu Nominal Adjectives?

Kata Sifat yang Berfungsi Kata Benda

Nominal adjectives adalah adjektiva yang berfungsi sebagai nomina (nouns). Adjektiva dapat berupa nomina bila nomina dihilangkan dan adjektiva yang menjelaskan nomina tersebut tetap ditulis.

Contoh 1:

I always read at least two storybooks to my children every night before they go to sleep. My boy loves the happy storybook, but my girl prefers the sad.

Penjelasan:

Happy merupakan adjektiva yang menerangkan storybook (nomina). Saat storybook dihilangkan, maka sad menjadi nominal adjective karena merupakan pengganti the sad storybook atau the sad one.

Contoh 2:

Bella tried the red dress, but then decided to buy the black.

Penjelasan:

Red merupakan adjektiva yang menerangkan dress (nomina). Jelas bahwa di belakang black (adjektiva) seharusnya terdapat nomina dress. Namun, black menjadi nominal adjective saat nomina dress dihilangkan.

Menunjukkan Sesuatu

Beberapa jenis adjective digunakan untuk menunjukkan kelas atau golong tertentu dengan mendeskripsikan salah satu atribut dari golongan tersebut. Misalnya, the rich menunjukkan golongan orang yang memiliki status finansial sama.

Contoh lain, misalnya:

  • The young
  • The poor
  • The meek
  • The blind
  • The resistance
  • The bourgeois
  • The innocent
  • The old

Nominal adjective juga dapat merujuk pada kebangsaan, misalnya:

  • The Americans
  • The German
  • The Chinese
  • The Indonesian
  • The French
  • The British
  • The Russians
  • The Japanese

Nominal adjective tidak selalu merujuk pada kelas/golongan yang berhubungan dengan orang, bahkan beberapa di antaranya tidak menunjukkan kelas/golongan sama sekali, misalnya:

  • The unfortunate
  • The contrary
  • The good
  • The opposite
  • The popular

Bentuk Perbandingan

Bentuk perbandingan dan superlatif juga dapat menjadi nominal adjectives, semisal:

  • The worst
  • The best
  • The oldest
  • The younger
  • The more important
  • The biggest
  • The fastest

Semua yang telah kami sebut di atas masuk ke dalam kategori nominal adjectives karena mereka menjelaskan karakteristik nouns (maka dari itu disebut “nominal”) dan karakteristik adjectives sekaligus, seperti:

  1. Penulisannya didahului dengan determiner atau article (biasanya the)
  2. Dapat dimodifikasi dengan adjectives (the unfortunate innocent)
  3. Dapat berupa tingkatan (the very young, the innocent poor)
  4. Dapat berbentuk perbandingan dan superlatif (the good, the better, the best)
